WEST CENTRAL
REGIONAL AA SERVICE CONFERENCE
Bemidji, MN
MARCH 7-8-9, 2003
AREA OFFICERS BREAKOUT SESSION -- Mike M., Area 24
Topic 1 -- Workshops, Conferences, and Forums - Are they open meetings or closed?
In general, people felt that the service functions should be open and available to all. It was pointed out throughout that service functions are exactly that, and not an actual AA meeting.
Topic 2 -- The responsibilities of the Area Chair people.
Everybody basically agreed that the responsibility of the Area Chair people should be communicated by the outgoing officer. Unfortunately this does not always happen, in which case the Chair should try to turn to someone with past experience to rely on. Many questions should be asked and you should research positions you are interested in so that you are able to make un informed decision when you decide to run.
Topic 3 -- How often should Area Officers meet, whether or not minutes should be taken?
How often we should meet was basically different in every Area. It was agreed that it was an individual decision -- each Area should meet as they see fit.
Topic 4 -- What tax status should the Area have?
There was much discussion on this, whether we should file as non-profit. Many questions were asked about how and why. Some Areas are incorporated and file taxes, non-profit status, yearly. Others, not incorporated, file every three years.
Overall the discussions were friendly and informational. Everyone got their questions answered and information was shared.
